According to research by the Ohio State Historical Society, in 1922 the Gordon’s baseball club of Chicago played the Cleveland Nine for the World Championship of Colored Baseball. This medal was presented to each player on the winning team. The series is chronicled in the Ohio State Historical Society Archives.
The interesting fact of championship series back during this period of black baseball history was that there was no recognized means for deciding which team was world’s champion. Two teams would often take it upon themselves to play each other for the “championship of colored baseball.”
