This photo is of the 1930 Newark Browns. The Browns often billed themselves as “Negro Champions,” but research has never determined on what that boast was based. The Newark Browns were an independent ball club based out of Newark, New Jersey. They played predominately during the 1920’s and 1930’s. For most of their career they played an independent schedule with their travel limited to the northeastern United States.
The Newark Browns only season in a major Negro League was in 1932 when they played in Cum Posey’s East-West League. They were in the league cellar with a 3-14 record when the league folded
